Fabrication Specialist (Sheet metal/Machine Shop)

Job Description

We are seeking a fabricator to join our team! You will oversee the fabrication department and crew. Must be able to operate brake press, shear, saw, lathe, drill, milling machine (CNC and manual on all listed). Desirable to have programming and operation experience with a plasma table. Desirable to be familiar with the set-up and installation startup of new machinery. Desirable to have management experience leading a crew of 1-3 men.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following (other duties may be assigned):


  • Must be able to operate brake press, shear, saw, lathe, drill, milling machine (CNC and manual on all listed).

  • Experience in operation of High Definition Plasma table desirable.

  • Uses the prescribed Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • Gathers work orders, interprets and plans weekly production schedule for all shifts.

  • Interfaces with lines and departments to coordinate production and provide fabrication assembly advice and instruction.

  • Receives raw material from vendors.

  • Transports and locates material in raw stock locations.

  • Maintains inventory and makes requisition for material as needed to maintain adequate stock levels.

  • Reads CAD drawings to determine material requirements and plan fabricating process including the operations required and order performed.

  • Sets stops or guides to specified length as indicated by scale, rule, or template.

  • Positions work-piece using cranes and lifts against stops or aligns layout marks with die or blade and activates machine.

  • Observes machine operation to detect work-piece defects or machine malfunction.

  • Measures work-piece dimensions to determine accuracy of machine operation.

  • Performs basic machine maintenance and repairs.

  • Stacks, marks, packs, and transports work-pieces to line staging areas.

  • Trains and leads machine operators.

  • Works with welder/fitters in assembly of products to meet specifications.

  • Works independently with minimal supervision.

  • Works overtime more regularly than other positions to assure production schedule is met and lines are supplied.

  • Adheres to safety rules. Shear and pinch points and metal weight are potential hazards.

  • Attends regularly scheduled production meetings.

  • Monitors inventory, requisitions, and schedules materials.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

  • Experienced in all aspects of fabrication for a period of 5 years or more.

  • Experienced in reading micrometers, calipers and any sort of fabrication measuring apparatus.

  • Supervisory experience leading 1-3 men.

  • Experience in reading CAD drawings.

Computer Skills:

  • Import Dxf files into plasma table.

  • Open drawings from computer.

  • Desirable to have experience using Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Forklift license.

  • Crane and hoist operation.

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Desirable to have welding experience.
